Lucía Ruíz de Aguirre entrevista a... lelerele

My name is Elena Sánchez Santos and I am a hopeless sentimental. I enjoy of everything that reminds me of my childhood, from the taste of an ice-cream to watching “My girl” in a loop.

This might be what made me work as a toy maker. It might also be that I enjoy of creating something out of nothing. It feels as if they came to life, as if I had some sort of magic in my hands and as if a part of me remained with them.

How do you feel when you sit in front of a blank page?
I actually love that moment as it’s filled with possibilities and even if it’s a bit scary, it does not block me. I’d rather let my imagination fly and make a selection afterwards. I try to find the moment to face it and if it isn’t the right time I just do something else, the time comes anyway.

Why Benito? Tell me about it, pretty please!
Benito’s name was actually chosen by my Instagram followers. I posted a picture of him when he was still a prototype just to see what people said and if they liked him as much as I did and it turned out to be a success. I asked them to suggest names for him and amongst them all, I chose Benito; I immediately thought, yes!!! Benito is his name!!!

What do you feel when someone buys one of your products?
I want to think that my plushies might become some kid’s inseparable mate, which they’ll share games and adventures with and that once they grow up, they will look at them and feel familiarity and nostalgia. Or they might be for a grown up remaining wishful thinking that’s still surrounded by beautiful things that awaken tenderness and remind him of his childhood. Whatever the case, I feel always happy when they leave because I know that those who buy them value the love I made them with and they will really enjoy them.

Do you really feel that what you do is what you always wanted to do?
I think that when I studied design I would have never imagined that I would do this. I’ve always liked to create and even if lelerele is not what I always dreamt of, it’s probably much better than what I imagined. It gathers everything I want for myself and makes me happy, so I feel really lucky for every decision I’ve taken in my life because they’ve led me where I am right now. I cannot imagine myself doing anything else that fills me more, that gives free rein to my creativity and that makes me feel as free as this project does.

What is your frustrated dream?

I’ve been thinking about what should I answer to this question for a while and I find it difficult because I don’t have any frustrated dream. There’s still plenty of life left to make dreams come true and the best is enjoying the journey and what leads you to them.
